Most of the time kinds of furniture, including tables, chairs, cabinets and bedroom set are usually made of wood. Very rarely do makers or manufacturers utilize metal and plastic. Various types of wood, whether it may be soft or hard, are being used. They may be durable and are able to last for quite a while; however, like all things they are still susceptible to any sort of damage which would greatly affect their aesthetic qualities and overall value. Do not fret though, there are a lot of ways on how to maintain their quality state and bring back their old form.
Contrary to popular opinion, never use soap and water
The use of soap and water to clean table tops, chairs, cabinets and bedroom sets is pretty much like writing a death sentence for the furniture piece. Using huge amounts of these will guarantee that the varnish and the finish will be washed off and lost, making the furniture vulnerable to scratches and chips. Varnishes and finishes are the materials that shiny and bright appearance to the furniture and provide some degree of superficial protection.
Place them away from direct contact with sunlight and air conditioners
We have all seen the condition of some wooden park benches or those porches that has been under the sun for long periods. Faded, dry and without luster. Putting them under the heat will make them overly susceptible to all forms of damage, which will obviously make them fragile and prone to breakage. They will also dry up and lose the elements making it sturdy.
Use a dry cloth or feather duster in sweeping dust away
In ridding a piece of furniture of dust, it is advisable to use bone-dry materials like cloth (use microfiber cloth) and a feather duster. Use these materials if you do not wish to scratch the wooden surface or damage it in any way.
Make use of wood cleaners
Believe it or not, these are available in the nearest hardware and grocery stores. These will allow the wood to retain its shape while ridding it of stains and dirt. Overall, these are pretty safe to use and your best option when it comes to stains.
Never combine any type of polish or varnish with the other
As much as possible, do not combine multiple types of varnish and finish and apply them on the wood. It will do more harm than good since the ingredients will most likely counteract each other. Only use one type of varnish and be sure to apply them once in a while, if you love your wood. If you can’t get over the smell, then retain your furniture’s condition at your own risk
Remember, furniture is a major investment. Their durability is a big thing, considering that they must remain in such shape for years, and probably even decades. Regardless of their type, accent or designs, ones that are made of wood must be handled with extreme care. Do not absent-mindedly clean it the wrong way and be sure to follow the reminders and tips mentioned above.
