How to Maintain Leather Sofas

home sofa set

A home would never be a home without the sofa (also called couch). It is the central part of the family's living room, the place where the members gather to watch prime time television, movies and play video games. The comfort it gives to its users is tantamount to infinity. However, sofas are vulnerable to everyday use and wear and tear. We may not be aware that the way we place, clean and use them may cause damage to not only the upholstery but also to the skeletal structure. There are a lot of things that we really need to know and consider in maintaining and cleaning leather sofas, so keep on reading to find out.

First off, keep the sofa away from sunlight. Leather and sunlight are not really the best of friends. Leather has natural oils in it, making it appear glossy while giving it a unique texture. The oils also protect it and prevents cracks.. Exposing it to sunlight will dry the leather up and remove the oils, making the texture flaky, more like a dried fish skin. It will then start to chip off and ultimately, fall off, exposing the insides of the sofa. The best way to avoid this is of course to keep the sofa in a shaded area away from sunlight. However, also remember to keep it away from the air conditioning units and heaters as this will generate the same effect.

Avoid using overly wet cloths alcohol based solutions. We mostly use rubbing alcohol in cleaning non-porous surfaces. Thing is, leather isn't one of them. Using alcohol to clean leather will generate the same effect as exposing it to sunlight as it will remove the natural oils and the gloss of the leather. In cleaning, using pretty wet materials will cause the color to fade, depriving the leather of its natural appearance and aesthetics, making it look horrible. Instead, be sure to use dry cloth or vacuum cleaners, to avoid unintentionally destroying the leather upholstery.

Pets. Leather can easily be scratched, ripped and damaged. Pets like dogs and cats should not be allowed on leather furniture, if possible. Cats may use the furniture to scratch in order to remove parasites from their claws. One way to avoid this is to of course provide a bed or place for your pet to cool off or better yet, train them.

In cleaning stains.... avoid soaps, detergents and other corrosive materials. This will definitely destroy the leather's surface. Avoid traditional cleaning methods at all costs. In removing stains, there are currently a lot of leather cleaning solutions available in supermarkets and grocery stores.

Leather classic home furniture may seem to be a durable material, but quite frankly, it isn't. It requires a lot of care, attention and detail in cleaning and maintaining it. Avoiding the above mentioned dangers will surely help out in prolonging the life of your couch and give you and your family a number of nice experiences in it. Remember, avoid sunlight, sources of heat and strong air, detergents and alcohol-based solutions!
